You don’t always have to download anything to get those spywares, a simple search or visit of an infected site will be as dangerous. But before downloading any software, always check those are legitimate.

Carol asked:

Computer viruses are getting more prevalent. It is impossible to prevent contact with them unless your computer lives in an isolated glass bubble. Just as human viruses are spread from person to person, computer viruses are spread from computer to computer.

But what is a virus? A virus is a piece of code (software) that attaches itself to a file. Your computer can get infected by having an infected file loaded on to it. So, for example, if you receive files in emails, download things from the web, or have friends who put their pen drives in your USB then you are at risk

Your computer can be infected and you may not know. Some viruses work the minute they infect the computer, others sit there waiting for a certain trigger. This might be the next time you startup your computer or run a program, or it might be waiting for a particular date and time. If you are infected you are also passing the virus on to others. And they pass it on, and on it goes.

The best form of defence is to have an up-to-date virus protection program on your computer. The up-to-date part is important as viruses are created and released every day. Your anti-virus program will download new virus definitions very frequently, even hourly.

There are lots of anti-virus programs out there. Here is a list of those considered to be the best in the field.

Windows Antivirus Software Review

Windows antivirus software is a necessity in today’s world of computers.  Activities such as Internet browsing, game playing, shopping and business allow many opportunities for a virus to get on your computer.  What is the best software?  I will review the most popular choices and give you my opinion below.

Symantec Antivirus (Norton)

Symantec Antivirus is probably the most popular software on the market today.  Norton is the name of the home users version.  This Windows antivirus software is a very good choice.  Symantec has an easy to use interface for beginners and is also easy to install.  It does tend to use a lot of system resources and you may notice your computer being a little slower in responding to your commands.  The software is updated daily with new virus definitions and program updates for a subscription fee.  Overall, this is a solid product that you can depend on to keep you safe but, could use some tweaking.

Trend Micro Antivirus

Trend Micro is another very popular Windows antivirus software program.  This program is more modern and more user friendly than most others.  It tends to appeal to a younger group of people with edgy design and slogan.  In detection tests Trend detects as well as any product and is lighter on system resources than Symantec.  This software is also updated daily for a fee.  The bottom line is that Trend Micro appears to be a better antivirus because it does not take as many system resources to run.

Kaspersky Antivirus

Kaspersky is most likely the least known Windows antivirus of this group but, is head and shoulders above the rest.  Even though you may not know the name, this is the best antivirus on the market.  In detection tests Kaspersky consistently scored higher than both of the other programs shown here.  This software also is extremely light on system resource use.  Like the other two it is updated daily via subscription.  In my opinion this is definitely the best of the group and I would recommend it to everyone.

In conclusion, all of these Windows antivirus software packages are great products.  Each would provide sufficient protection for any computer.  With these products installed, your risk of getting a virus is very slight but, does still exist.  For that reason alone I would opt for Kaspersky because of its stellar performance in detection tests.  This gives you a much better chance of finding and removing a virus if you ever do get one.
